Papyrus Technology Benefits
What does all this mean to the user of the Papyrus System. What benefits
can be gained by investing in state-of-the-art.
1. No black-box obsolence
For many printer connectivity solutions in the medium throughput range,
converter-(black)boxes seem to be the way to go. Their plug-in simplicity
is appealing despite the long-term disadvantages.
Black-box drawbacks:
-
Not scalable in throughput.
-
Some kind of driver SW is required.
-
Only certain printers are supported.
-
One box per incoming data-stream.
-
Functionality is not upgrade-able.
-
One unit/printer regardless throughput.
-
No local PC application printing.
2. Network traffic reduction
The network traffic involving printing with emulations and conversions
can be quite dramatic due to the usually high image content of such converted
data streams. Papyrus Server offers not only resource management between
host and server and the server and printer, but it also utilizes fonts,
forms and logos of the target printer properly, by means of its resource
conversion engine.
Resources are cached on the printer/file server and also in the memory
of Papyrus Server. Network traffic is therefore greatly reduced.
3. Full AFP functionality
Papyrus Server is a fully featured and complete AFP Print Server. It
supports all PAGEDEF functions including conditional processing and fully
supports highlight color printing. As it does not use IPDS emulation,
but executes from the AFPDS library, compatibility is with the IBM MO:DCA
definition and not with a specific printer.
With the Papyrus Host FSS interface, it provides the same look and feel
as IBM PSF to the user.
