So, will the WebBrowser based Intranet reduce the need for complex
document applications and printing? Certainly not! HTML itself is
far to limited for that. Trying to print a HTML document is a pure
game of luck. HTML does not understand where a page break is and
certainly cannot control where it is supposed to happen. You will
even find text-lines cut in half across two pages!
So what is the sense then for ISIS to enter this world? Simple,
because it is simple - if you keep it simple. KISS (Keep It Simple,
Stupid) at its best. For the purpose of a generalized access to
documents and resources, Webservers and HTML based browsers are
quite usable.
Looking at the rush of useless 49$ HTML authoring tools, which
cause Papyrus Designer users to 'roll around on the floor laughing'
or *RAOTFL* in 'netspeak, the need for serious development tools
for the corporate Intranet is more than obvious.
Look out for HTML WYSIWYG tools, Web management tools, HTML
conversions, http: support for the Papyrus Server, WebBrowser support
in the Papyrus Client and so on. ISIS has already announced in April
1996 that Papyrus will support HTML additionally to a number of
other languages.
ISIS needs to give its customers the opportunity to expand their
document applications into the Internet to partners, agents and
eventually directly to its customers. All this will be accompanied
by a major rebuild of our own website, which will move inhouse and
be linked with a 1Mb link to the Internet backbone directly.
